On September 3rd, media reports emerged stating that NVIDIA has announced the need for a reticle-to-order (RTO) process for their RTX 50 series graphics cards to improve yield rates. This development may push the launch date back to the first half of 2025.
The Blackwell architecture, which utilizes TSMC’s 4nm process technology, boasts over 200 billion transistors. However, the CoWoS-L packaging technology has led to yield issues. Sources reveal that there’s a mismatch in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between the GPU die, LSI bridge, RDL interposer, and the main substrate.
To address these challenges, NVIDIA has been forced to redesign the top metal layers and bumps of the GPU chip.
This news suggests that current graphics cards may retain their value for a bit longer.
